Overview

**Please note that the final deadline for this project was September 16. If you’d like to still join the project Maranatha will need to collect your full payment, flight itinerary, and passport copy within a few days of your registration.**

Join Maranatha in the fascinating country of Kenya! There is a great need for churches and school in this eastern African country, and local church leadership have requested Maranatha’s assistance.

Volunteers on this project will be working at the Kajiado Adventist School and Rescue Center. This school started in 2000 with the mission to empower the Maasai girls and to give them a safe place to escape the culture that encourages child marriages and female genital mutilation. Once the girls move in, they basically become orphans since their families do not want them to come back. Since it began, the school has helped more than 2000 students. Currently they have 92 girls and 22 boys who help the girls form positive friendships with both genders. In addition, there are 50 high school and university aged girls who return on break. And there are another 100 girls on the waiting list!

Right now, the biggest need are new dormitories with bathrooms. Volunteers will help lay block for the walls of two bathrooms. If we have enough volunteers, we would also like to offer children’s ministry programs and health education programs for the children at the school.

This project also includes a safari excursion in the world-famous Masai Mara at the end of the project.

Excursions
Masai Mara and Nairobi

At the end of the project, volunteers will experience some of the wildlife of Kenya at the Masai Mara. On Sunday morning, the group will travel to the Masai Mara, one of the largest national parks in Kenya. Within a few hours of being at the reserve, it is possible to see the “Big Five” (lion, leopard, water buffalo, rhinoceros, and elephant) as well as many other wild animals including zebras, giraffes, hippopotamuses, wildebeests, cheetahs, antelope, vultures, hyenas, and much more! The group will arrive in the afternoon and enjoy a safari drive. They will spend the night at the beautiful Sopa Lodge in the game park. The following day, the group will have an all-day safari with a sack lunch.

On Tuesday, the group will return to Nairobi and spend the night. The following morning the group will visit two of Nairobi’s most popular attractions: The David Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage and the Giraffe Centre. Both of these attractions give opportunities for up close and personal interactions with the animals. Ever wanted to feed an elephant or get licked by a giraffe? Now’s your chance! That evening, volunteers will head to the airport for evening departures home.

The excursion is considered part of the entire project. All hotels, food, transportation, activities, and park entrances during the excursion days are covered by the excursion fee paid to Maranatha.
