Overview

Join Maranatha in the fascinating country of Kenya! There is a great need for churches and school in this eastern African country, and local church leadership has requested Maranatha’s assistance.

Volunteers on this project will be working at the Kajiado Adventist School and Rescue Center. This school started in 2000 with the mission to empower the Maasai girls and to give them a safe place to escape the culture that encourages child marriages and female genital mutilation. Once the girls move in, they basically become orphans since their families do not want them to come back. Since it began, the school has helped more than 2000 students. Currently they have 92 girls and 22 boys who help the girls form positive friendships with both genders. In addition, there are 50 high school and university aged girls who return on break. And there are another 100 girls on the waiting list!

This group will be building one of the new buildings for the secondary school campus. Depending on the skills of the volunteers who join the team, there may also be opportunities to conduct local community outreach, children’s programs, and health education.

This project will also include a safari excursion in the world-famous Amboseli and Masai Mara National Parks at the end of the project.

Excursions
Amboseli National Park

Amboseli National Park is located the Kenya-Tanzania border and about an hour from Kajiado. Amboseli is one of the top ten national reserves in Kenya and boasts amazing views of Mount Kilimanjaro. The park is famous for being the best place in Africa to get close to freeranging elephants, and it is possible to see the “Big Five” (lion, leopard, water buffalo, rhinoceros, and elephant), as well as many other wild animals including cheetahs, giraffes, zebras, antelopes, crocodiles, and much more! The group will spend one day in the park.

Masai Mara National Park

Sunday, June 27: The group will drive to Masai Mara National Park.

Monday, June 28: Masai Mara National Park is one of the largest national parks in Kenya. Within a few hours of being at the reserve, it is possible to see the “Big Five” (lion, leopard, water buffalo, rhinoceros, and elephant) as well as many other wild animals including zebras, giraffes, hippopotamuses, wildebeests, cheetahs, antelope, vultures, hyenas, and much more! The group will enjoy an all-day safari in the park.

Tuesday, June 29: The group will return to Nairobi, where they’ll visit one of the city’s most popular attractions: The Giraffe Centre. Here volunteers will get to experience an up-close-and-personal encounter with giraffes. Then volunteers will stop at a local market for souvenir shopping before heading to the airport that evening for their flights home.

The excursion is considered part of the project. All hotels, food, transportation, activities, and park entrances during the excursion days are covered by the excursion fee paid to Maranatha.
