Overview

Join Maranatha on the island nation of Sao Tome, located off the western coast of Africa. Maranatha recently completed a One Day School Campus and the Adventist leadership has asked for assistance with new churches as well. Many congregations are meeting in people’s homes or in makeshift building. Funds are limited and there is no money to build permanent worship spaces. Maranatha have committed to building eight One Day Churches for these congregations in need.

Volunteers on this project will help construct churches throughout the island. If enough volunteers join the project, there may also be the opportunity to reach out into the local community through activities such as children’s ministry programs and health education. All volunteers are welcome on this project. We are in special need of volunteers who speak English and Portuguese.

At the end of the project there is an optional excursion available for those who wish to extend their time on the island.

DEPARTUREVolunteers who join only the project will depart from Sao Tome (airport code TMS) in the evening of Saturday, July 14, 2018. Those joining the excursion will depart from Sao Tome (airport code TMS) in the evening of Tuesday, July 17, 2018.

Travel Information

Volunteers will purchase their own plane tickets to Sao Tome. Maranatha representatives will meet volunteers upon arrival. Please wait for confirmation before purchasing your airfare to ensure that there is enough space on the project. More information including arrival and departure airports and time will be available in an information packet once registration is available. Booking outside these windows could result in additional fees and missed portions of the project. Sao Tome is a little more difficult to get to than some other African countries. The best fares we have found are achieved by working through a travel agent and doing two round trip tickets: one to Lisbon, Portugal, and one from Lisbon to Sao Tome and back.

Excursions
Optional Excursion: Ilheu das Rolas $345

At the end of the project, volunteers can choose to travel to the southern part of the island of Sao Tome and take a boat to a smaller island off the tip called Ilheu das Rolas. There, the group will stay at a resort hotel located right on the beach with a pool looking over the ocean. The group will visit a monument that is built on the equator line and will have the opportunity to relax at the resort or enjoy other activities such as snorkeling, scuba diving, or spa appointments at an additional price. The optional excursion has an additional fee of $345 per person which includes housing, food, transportation, and insurance.
