Overview

Join volunteers in India as they construct new classrooms for the Graceland Adventist school in northeastern India. The school is located amongst eucalyptus trees in the hills of the remote village of Saitual, in the state of Mizoram. It was started in 1967 with an enrollment of 339 students. The current classrooms are made out of wood that is chipping and decomposing, leaving many of the buildings structurally unsound. The school does not have space to accommodate new students and, as it is, the poor state of the school’s infrastructure makes it hard to recruit new families. The local Adventist conference has reached out to Maranatha’s assistance to rebuild ten of the elementary school classrooms. Volunteers on this project will help meet this immediate need by construction several One Day School classrooms with panel sheeting walls. In addition, the group will reach out into the local community to conduct outreach such as children’s ministry programs and health education.

Excursions
Kaziranga National Park - $650

At the end of the project, March 5 -8, volunteers can choose to extend their stay in India by joining an optional excursion to Kaziranga National Park and the city of Guwahati. Kaziranga National Park is located on the boarders of the Brahmaputra River in norther India. It is home to the world’s largest population of great one-horned rhinoceroses. Other animals include water buffalo, elephants, gibbons, macaques, and lucky visitors can even spot Indian tigers. After Kaziranga, volunteers will continue on to Guwahati, the capital of the Indian state of Assam. There, they will take in local sights including a silk emporium, a bazaar with shopping opportunities, and the Kalakshetra (a cultural institution with museums, theaters, and places of worship). The following morning volunteers will depart from Guwahati. This four-day excursion has an additional fee of $650 per person which includes housing, food, ground transportation to and from Kaziranga National Park, two safari drives, a tour of Guwahati and an option to do morning elephant rides at an additional cost. It does not include air transportation from Aizawl to Guwahati. Flight information is available in the information packet.
