Story

In 1990, brother Fortunato Catashunga left the mission church to live among the people and began sharing the gospel in his community. For two years, a small group met in his home. In January 1992, brother Urias Rubio generously donated the land where La Voz de la Esperanza church now stands. What started as a humble house church has grown into a committed congregation that continues to worship with great faith and perseverance.

This past August, a team of 13 volunteers from Monticello Seventh-day Adventist Church in Arkansas and Wilkesboro Adventist Church in North Carolina came together with Maranatha Volunteers International to help this dedicated congregation. Led by volunteer pastor Roy Robinson, the group worked side by side with local church members to lay the block walls of a new church structure. They shared meals in the old leaking shack, experienced thunderstorms together, and built more than just walls — they built lasting friendships and a deeper sense of connection as part of God’s global family.

The volunteers were deeply moved by the congregation’s joy, commitment, and willingness to help with the construction despite their limited resources. “It creates a desire to share the gospel and provide,” said Roy Robinson. “We’re all part of the same family.” That bond continues today. The Arkansas and North Carolina teams have stayed connected with La Voz de la Esperanza and are now raising the final funds needed to complete the church.

A significant portion of the funds has been donated by the group of volunteers and other generous donors, which has allowed us to complete a big part of the church. To be able to finish the church 100%, Maranatha still needs to raise the remaining $11,000.

A finished church includes a strong metal frame, roof, walls, sidewalks, stucco, paint, electrical, windows, and doors.
