First Canadian Project in Three Years

This week, Maranatha Volunteers International wrapped up its first project in Canada since before the COVID pandemic. Around 45 volunteers gathered in British Columbia at Camp Hope to serve at this summer camp and retreat center. The camp was excited to host a Maranatha project again, as it had been a regular occurrence in the years leading up to the pandemic. But after the project in March 2020, the limited camp staff haven’t been able to keep up with the overwhelming upkeep of the property.

This time around, organized volunteers were motivated to accomplish many tasks around the camp. Some of the main projects included pouring new sidewalks around the main campmeeting area and installing tongue and groove panels in the ceiling of a large outdoor picnic structure. Volunteers renovated some of the cabins by painting, installing new flooring and window trim, and cleaning. Other jobs included pressure washing sidewalks and organizing donated clothing.

For many volunteers it was a special experience to serve on Maranatha’s first project back in the country after several years. “Canada is a very beautiful country and we enjoyed coming back to Camp Hope and seeing old friends,” said Maranatha board member and project coordinator, Ed Jensen. “Many Canadians showed up to work on their camp, and it’s always amazing how God brings just the right people to each project. Staff were very cooperative and appreciated Maranatha very much.”

Each year, Maranatha works with organizations in the United States and Canada to provide volunteer labor for various construction or renovation projects at summer camps and retreat centers, schools, and churches. Work ranges from renovations of existing buildings to new construction, and saves thousands of dollars in labor costs.
